Future Shift is a 3-month paid internship opportunity running between October – December 2022.
It’s an innovative internship programme – in addition to their work placements, the interns also join together in weekly change-leadership and personal development workshops. These workshops focus on developing the skills and tools combined with the inspiration, confidence and ability to facilitate compassionate and proactive change to tackle the climate emergency.
Alongside this training, our intern will be working on a research project exploring opportunities to embed circular economy practices in our architectural projects.
The built environment generates nearly 50% of annual global CO2 emissions. Of those total emissions, building operations are responsible for 27% annually, while building materials and construction (typically referred to as embodied carbon) are responsible for an additional 20% annually.
We must eliminate all CO2 emissions from the built environment by 2040 to meet 1.5°Climate targets, and at Studio Skein we think that embedding circular economy practices in the design and construction process is a necessary adjustment that architects and contractors will have to make. This means finding ways to source and use repurposed demolition and manufacturing waste as construction materials for new or retrofit buildings, identifying and addressing the challenges that may entail.
Our internship opportunity will help us to explore this challenge by sourcing waste materials that are available locally, and forging partnerships that will help to create a circular economy supply chain for construction materials in Plymouth and the south west.
In addition to in interest in the circular economy, the successful candidate will need good communication skills and the confidence to approach potential partner businesses, as well as the ability to take the initiative and work independently and with the Studio Skein team.
Submit your application via the Future Shift webpage. The closing date is midnight Tuesday 23 August 2022.
