Welcome to Ana Vidal and Daniel Opara who join us for a 3 month internship supported by the University of Plymouth & Low Carbon Devon’s Future Shift programme.  Ana and Daniel will be researching opportunities to create a circular economy supply chain for construction materials in Plymouth and the south west by reaching out to local waste producers and waste handlers.

The built environment generates nearly 50% of annual global CO2 emissions. Of those total emissions, building operations are responsible for 27% annually, while building materials and construction (typically referred to as embodied carbon) are responsible for an additional 20% annually.

We must eliminate all CO2 emissions from the built environment by 2040 to meet 1.5°Climate targets, and at Studio Skein we think that embedding circular economy practices in the design and construction process is a necessary adjustment that architects and contractors will have to make.  This means finding ways to source and use repurposed demolition and manufacturing waste as construction materials for new or retrofit buildings, identifying and addressing the challenges that may entail.
