Harbourside penthouse extension, Plymouth

CONTEMPORARY

Crow's nest

This project involved making alterations to two penthouses, providing each of the owners with a new roof terrace from which to admire panoramic views of Sutton Harbour and the Barbican.

The design was carefully considered to support the case for making alterations in a sensitive Conservation Area, minimising the visual impact of the new balconies when viewed from the Barbican.  Door and balustrade frames are gunmetal grey in colour to blend in with the surrounding roofscape.  The glazing is non-reflective glass, and the glass panels of the balustrades tilt outwards to prevent glare.

For our clients, what was formerly a cramped mansard roof space, has been dramatically transformed into a contemporary ‘crow’s nest’ from which to admire the stunning views.

“We would like to take this opportunity to formally thank you for all your work on our behalf.  We are sure that your insight and detailed work have made it possible to achieve a result which, judging by the reactions of those who have already seen the outcome, undoubtedly has the real “wow” factor we have been striving to achieve.” Mr & Mrs Coates, Dolphin House, Plymouth.  March 2010
