We were appointed to update and improve a run-down chip shop in Plymouth’s Barbican area, following a change of ownership in 2016.  The new owners traded through the summer months and identified the potential to increase trade by improving the shopfront, décor and equipment.

The shop provided the largest seated fish and chip restaurant in the area, offering a much needed resting spot for visitors on rainy days, but the tired and dated décor was failing to attract customers.

We designed a scheme that was both vibrant and contemporary whilst also remaining sensitive to the Conservation Area setting. New signage and redecoration of the shopfront created an inviting space for customers, as well as contributing to the overall improvement of the historic street frontage.   A new, more efficient, and easy-to-maintain extract system and kitchen fit-out, ensured the safe and sustainable future operation of the business.

Working with our clients, we produced two scheme options for the interior design, from which a final scheme that alluded to maritime colours and themes was chosen. Surface finishes for walls, floors, fixed seating and counters were designed in complementary textures and colours.  A range of seating including loose chairs, banquette benches and high stools offered flexibility for the owners and variety for customer choice.

A process of liaison and careful negotiation with the local planning department and Conservation Officer was required to obtain consent for changes to the shop-front and extract chimney in this historic quarter of Plymouth. Following the refit, the owners reported marked improvement in trade and turnover.
